Personal Profile Comm 200

My name is Sophia Richards. I was named after my great great grandmother, Sophia Haus, who emigrated to North Dakota from Canada, and before that from Germany. I am a freshman at NDSU. I am from an absolutely tiny town an hour Northwest of Fargo. It is called Hope, and used to be a bustling railroad town in the early 1900s, but now has a population of a mere 250 people. I graduated with only eight other kids in my class. My parents met while they were both students here at NDSU. My dad picked up my mom at the library for their first date. I guess you could say that NDSU is the reason I'm even alive in the first place, and so it felt intrinsic that I went here. I am taking this class because it is required for my Strategic Communications major, but even if it wasn't required I would still take it anyways, as I need to hone my media writing skills if I want to have any sort of career related to media. My dream career is to work at a marketing firm in the Minneapolis area. I do not eat peanut butter and jelly, I prefer to eat peanut butter and jelly on a slice of burnt toast. Delicious. My least favorite movie is probably the Notebook. I can think of a million other things that I would rather do than watch Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling make out for two hours. Some of my favorite movies are Gone With the Wind, Les Miserables, The Wolverine, and Spirited Away. I also liked Old boy, but I wouldn't rank it with my favorites. I think that I can bring to the table is that I have a very chatty writing style, and I personally think that that makes for the best media writing. One thing I think that you should know about me is that although I may look like a basic teenage girl, I am a closeted nerd. All my friends grew up watching the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, but I was obsessed with Animal Planet and the History Channel. Although I love Disney movies, the television shows were never my cup of tea. I love anime, the X-Men, and Star Wars. One of my biggest accomplishments in life is reading the whole 1,400 pages of Les Miserables during the second semester of my sophomore year of high school. I studied abroad in Japan when I was sixteen years old. I spend six weeks in Yokohama, Japan. Ask me to introduce myself in Japanese. I've been told by a woman from Japan at my grandmother's church that I have very good diction, even after two years. One thing I think you could do to help me succeed in the class is to be sure to tell us what assignments we need to get done right before class. This helps me make a mental note of everything I need to get done when I am finished with classes for the day.

  1. This was very well written, I'm looking forward to more of your work this semester. While I tend to write in a more conversational tone as well, it may not be appropriate for every type of story. Word choice is also as important as tone when writing; I have no idea what an absolutely tiny town is or how one would define a town as absolutely tiny. One thing I'm mentioning to everyone is to proofread your work and read your work aloud before submitting it. I'll get into the reasoning behind each and both later in the semester.
