Famous Misquotes

“Let them eat cake” is perhaps one of the most iconic quotes of all time. The phrase, believed to be uttered by the last queen of France Marie Antionette after hearing that the people of France were starving, never left the lips of the Austrian-turned-French queen. The quote, according to All That’s Interesting, was said to have come from another royal woman, also named Marie almost one hundred years before. This Marie, however, actually said, “Let them eat pastry.” I believe that this misquote achieved so much fame because it would not have been too surprising if Marie Antionette had actually said it. She lived a very lavish lifestyle and was known for her gambling, wasteful spending, and taking her hairstyles and clothing to new extremes.  “Nice guys finish last” is a very widely-known phrase that I myself have heard hundreds of times. It is often used in dating situations to state that boys that are nice don’t often get the girl. The quote comes from a man named Leo Durocher ...

Interview

What a Christian Judaism Professor Does in His Free Time               By the time I had scaled the four flights of steps to the top floor of Minard Hall, I was huffing and puffing. It was not yet nine a.m. What was I doing at such an ungodly hour, you ask? Going to ask my History of Judaism professor, the esteemed Dr. Sean Burt, what he does in his free time. I sat down with Dr. Burt in his cozy office in the religion department. Two of the room’s walls were entirely lined with colorful books of all varieties. I started off the interview on a topic that I was very excited to discuss, the topic of books. When asked what his favorite book was, Dr. Burt’s eyes brightened, and he showed me a copy of   The Hour of The Star  by Clarice Lispector. His copy had post-it notes sticking out of it, most likely marking his favorite sections. “It’s a book about the experience of living.” Burt explained. Next I asked Dr. Burt about his favorite movie, ...

Donald Trump VS Jim Acosta

Week 4 Newswriting Assignment              During a presidential press conference, which took place in November 2018, Jim Acosta was called on to ask a question of President Donald Trump. President Trump already had negative opinions about Mr. Acosta, and expressed these quite openly before Mr. Acosta had even finished asking his questions about issues relevant to President Trump’s policies and current events that were relevant to the American public. President Trump has very negative feelings about the CNN, the news corporation that Mr. Acosta was representing. The issue that was being brought up by Acosta was an issue of a group of immigrants attempting to enter into the United States. Acosta was presenting facts to President Trump in a calm and collected way, but wasn’t allowed to speak because he had different political viewpoints from Donald Trump.  Our Commander-In-Chief said the Cable News Network was full of “...

Slander and Libel

This is an example of slander because she said this with no evidence. There was evidence, however, that he did rape Kesha. This was a step back in her case against him, which she filed after the #MeToo movement.  https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/03/business/elon-musk-defamation-trial.html Elon Musk called a cave explorer a Pedo Guy, while they were fighting to donate money to a charitable cause. People got upset about it, especially the cave guy.
