My ~passion~ for ~fashion~
I never really thought about my voice as a writer until I took this class. The most writing I had ever done was two-page book reports for English 12 in high school. My English teacher didn’t mess around and disapproved of chattiness in student’s assignments, so I kept my reports rather straightforward. I would say my journalistic style has been influenced by my favorite authors, C.S. Lewis and Victor Hugo, as well as the journalists featured in the magazine I grew up reading, American Vogue. Although my beloved C.S. Lewis and Victor Hugo are not nearly journalists, (Hugo is more of a poet than Lewis, a novelist,) their writing styles are very clean, elegant, and are very easily recognizable. I would like to think that one could pick my pieces out of a stack if they had read some of my work, but this is just what I would like to think and has yet to be either confirmed or denied. My other great influencers are the contributors of Vogue in nearly every issue for the past ten years. Besides the ones I only looked skimmed through and glanced at the pictures, of course.
When first asked what I could see myself writing about as a legitimate journalist, nothing really came to mind. Now, after giving it some serious thought, it seems so obvious that my focus should be fashion. All throughout my childhood I took whatever blankets and towels I could find and tie, fold, and twist them into dresses. This came very much in handy for a toga party I attended, the sheet I used was easily transformed into a toga Julius Caesar would have been proud to wear. My mother and I would watch every season of Project Runway religiously when I was a middle schooler. I keep up with the ad campaigns of all the major fashion houses and could tell you what models starred in most of them. I am involved with the Fashion Apparel Business Organization on campus and have even modeled for some clothing stores in and around Fargo. Fashion is something that has always excited me and something that I know I will be passionate about until the end of my life. I think I would be a great fashion writer for a magazine. I would love to write about recent fashion trends and how to translate them into everyday outfits for the average woman.
